How Axtin 8mg Works 

  • Absorption – Astaxanthin is fat-soluble. Taken with a meal containing fat, it is absorbed in the small intestine along with dietary fats and carried through the bloodstream to the skin, eyes, and other tissues.
  • Protects the whole cell – Astaxanthin spans the entire cell membrane, guarding both its inner and outer layers, while vitamin C and vitamin E each protect only one side (Ambati et al., Marine Drugs, 2014). 
  • Neutralises free radicals – It quenches singlet oxygen and free radicals created by UV light, pollution, and stress, and unlike some antioxidants, it does not turn pro-oxidant under stress. 
  • Reaches the eyes – Astaxanthin can cross the blood–retina barrier, helping protect eye tissues from the oxidative stress of long hours of screen work (Ambati et al., Marine Drugs, 2014). 
  • Calms the skin – By lowering oxidative stress, astaxanthin helps reduce the low-grade inflammation that contributes to dryness, rough texture, and visible aging.

What it means: Hours on phones, laptops, and tablets keep the eye's focusing muscles working hard and expose eye tissues to oxidative stress. Astaxanthin helps support eye comfort and clear vision during screen time.  What the research says: In a randomised, placebo-controlled trial, 60 healthy adults took 9mg of astaxanthin – close to the 8mg in one Axtin 8mg softgel – or a placebo daily for 6 weeks. In participants aged 40 and over, astaxanthin protected visual sharpness after screen (VDT) work significantly better than placebo (Sekikawa et al., Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, 2023). In a second randomised, double-blind trial, 64 children with 4 or more hours of daily screen time who took 4mg of AstaReal® Astaxanthin for 84 days had greater improvement in digital eye strain and 27% lower visual fatigue than placebo (Hecht et al., Advances in Therapy, 2025).

What it means: Much of what we see as aging – on the skin and in the body – is linked to oxidative stress and low-grade inflammation that build up with sun, dry weather and time. A higher daily astaxanthin intake supports long-term protection against these changes. 
What the research says: In a 16-week placebo-controlled study of 65 healthy women through a dry, sunny season, wrinkles and skin moisture worsened in the placebo group but not in the 6mg or 12mg astaxanthin groups. Only the higher 12mg dose also prevented a rise in the skin inflammation marker IL-1α (Tominaga et al., Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, 2017).

What the research says: In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 42 healthy young women took 0, 2 or 8mg of astaxanthin daily for 8 weeks. A marker of DNA oxidative damage (8-OHdG) was significantly lower from week 4 with astaxanthin, and the 8mg dose – the strength in one Axtin 8mg softgel – also increased natural killer cell activity and T and B immune cell responses (Park et al., Nutrition & Metabolism, 2010).
