What is Vitamin D and its Role?

by Mehnaz Akhtar 24 Oct 2024 0 Comments

Meet the dazzling nutrient with a warm personality and a cool job – Vitamin D!
This little wonder is like the sun's best friend, working behind the scenes to make us strong, happy, and healthy. From building brawny bones to putting a smile on our faces, Vitamin D has a bag of tricks that'll leave you amazed.

So, grab your shades and join the sunny side as we unravel the wonders of Vitamin D – the powerhouse nutrient that's more than just sunshine in a bottle! 🌞💪

What is Vitamin D good for?

Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that our bodies adore. It is important to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. 💪
But wait, there's more! Vitamin D is not just about bones! It's a multitasker!

It helps your immune system fight off infections, boosts your mood and mental well-being, and keeps you energized and fatigue-free.
Who doesn't want that?

What are the types of Vitamin D?

This fat-soluble vitamin D exists in two forms:

  • Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) 🡪 Produced in Plants and Fungi.
  • and Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) 🡪 Produced in Animals, including Humans.

You can absorb both types in your body, but studies have shown that vitamin D3 raises your levels more effectively than vitamin D2.

And the best part is that Vitamin D3 could also help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of certain cancers like colorectal, prostate, pancreatic, and even breast cancer.

How do I get more Vitamin D?

There are three basic ways you can get it from:

Sunlight

When your skin soaks up those sun-kissed rays, it triggers Vitamin D activation in your body. Just imagine yourself lounging in the morning sun, sipping tea on your balcony while naturally boosting your Vitamin D levels. It only takes a mere 10-15 minutes of sun exposure to work its magic, especially when those UVB rays are at their peak during this time. 🌞
Ah, the bliss!

Through Diet

Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol is not only synthesized through sunlight☀️ but can also be obtained from the yummiest foods such as fish, beef liver, egg yolk, cheese, and vitamin D-fortified milk. 🥛
However, relying solely on diet may not provide enough vitamin D to meet your daily requirements. That's where our exceptional supplements come into play.💊

Through Nutritional Supplements

Another way to give your vitamin D levels a boost is by the use of vitamin D supplements. These supplements can be a reliable and convenient option, as they are specially formulated to provide the necessary amount of Vitamin D needed by the body. 💊 They offer a practical solution for individuals who may have limited sun exposure or difficulty obtaining enough Vitamin D through their diet alone.

Examples of such supplements include SunnyD, SunnyD PRO etc.

Who has the most Vitamin D Deficiency?

☀️In today's world of sedentary lifestyles and endless screen time, our bodies miss out on those essential UVB rays. Whether it's sitting like a couch potato, glued to our phones, or dealing with a hectic work schedule, it leaves us deficient in this vital Vitamin D. 📱📅

Mostly, older adults, individuals with darker skin, limited sun exposure, fat malabsorption conditions, excess weight or obesity, and those with gastric bypass surgery are prone to Vitamin D deficiency. 🪡

Is Vitamin D Deficiency serious?

Yes!
If you are still not taking your cracky bones seriously, you should. Because, vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone deformities, like osteoporosis and osteomalacia in adults and rickets in children.

A low vitamin D level can be diagnosed with a blood test called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Although definitions of vitamin D deficiency vary to some extent, most groups use the following values recommended by the National Academy of Medicine for adults:

  • If your 25(OH)D concentration is ≥20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L), you're in the sunshine zone of Vitamin D sufficiency. Your body is feeling the glow of good health!
  • A bit below the recommended mark, with a 25(OH)D concentration of 12 to <20 ng/mL (30 to 50 nmol/L)? You're in the shadows of Vitamin D insufficiency. Time to let some sunbeams in!
  • Watch out for the danger zone! If your 25(OH)D level drops below <12 ng/mL (30 nmol/L), you've entered the realm of Vitamin D deficiency. Your bones might be feeling a little blue.
  • But hey, not too much of a good thing either! For adults ingesting substantial calcium, a 25(OH)D level above >100 ng/mL (>250 nmol/mL) could pose a "risk" of vitamin D toxicity. So, let's not go overboard!

Remember, experts agree that levels lower than 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) are suboptimal for bone health. But wait!
The ultimate solution to your
Vitamin D deficiency awaits!
