BREAST CANCER – What You Need to Know This PINKTOBER

by Mehnaz Akhtar 18 Oct 2024 0 Comments

Breast cancer is a term we hear so often, yet many of us don’t really take it seriously until it hits close to home.
Did you know that 1 in 9 women in Pakistan is at risk of developing breast cancer at some point in her life? Globally, a woman loses her life to this disease every few minutes.

Startling, right?
Well, it should be, because it is not just a statistic; it’s a reality that could impact anyone—your mother, sister, daughter, friend, or even yourself. The truth is, we often don’t pay attention to it until it affects someone we care about. That’s why Pinktober, the month of October dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness, is so crucial.

But let’s be honest – sometimes, all we do is wear a pink ribbon, post a picture, and move on with life. However, breast cancer awareness should be more than just a trend—it’s a life-saving movement that demands action.

In this blog, let’s dive into what you really need to know about breast cancer and how you can make a difference—not just for yourself, but for all the women in your life.

So, what exactly is Breast Cancer?

Let’s break it down. Your body’s cells are constantly growing and dividing, right?Normally, this process is well-controlled. But when things go imbalanced, cells start multiplying uncontrollably, forming a tumor. This is where the problem starts. In breast cancer, these abnormal cells grow inside the milk ducts or lobules of the breast and, if left untreated, can spread to other parts of the body.

Who’s at Risk?

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “Am I at risk?”
Well, if you’re a woman reading this, the answer is a big YES.
Around 99% of cases hit women, while it’s far less common in men, though not impossible.
So, what else puts you in the danger zone? Check this out:

  • Obesity
  • Advancing age
  • Previous Radiation or hormone therapy
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Use of tobacco or alcohol
  • Gene mutations like BRCA1, BRCA2
  • Early menstruation (<12 years)
  • Late menopause (>50 years)
  • Having no children or first child after age 30

And let me say it again, loud and clear: even without all those factors, just being a woman is enough to put you at risk.
So don’t wait for a wake-up call—stay sharp, stay proactive, and take charge of your health!

Spotting the Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer doesn’t always come with big, flashy warning signs. Sometimes, it quietly slips in without any symptoms, which is why early detection is so important. But here are some signs you should definitely keep an eye on:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
  • Changes in breast size, shape, or appearance
  • Redness, dimpling, or other skin changes on the breast
  • Persistent pain in the breast or armpit that doesn’t go away
  • Changes in the nipple or areola

Notice any of these?
Don’t hesitate—get it checked out right away! Early detection can increase your survival rate by an impressive 93% in the first five years.

Remember, the real danger lies in ignoring the signs. The longer you wait, the trickier it gets to tackle.

Self-Exams: Know Your Normal

You’re unique, and so are your breasts! One of the best ways to detect breast cancer early is to know what’s normal for you. A Breast Self-Examination (BSE) can help you catch any unusual changes.

Here’s how to do it:

  • In the shower: Raise one arm behind your head. With the other hand, gently use the pads of your three middle fingers to move in a circular motion over your breast, feeling for any lumps or thick spots. Then, switch hands and repeat the process.
  • In front of the mirror: With your arms at your sides, look for visual changes like dimpling or swelling. Then, press your hands on your hips and flex your chest muscles.
  • Lying down: Use your right hand to feel your left breast and vice versa. Press down in circular motions with the pads of your fingers, checking for abnormalities.

Can I Rely on Self-Exams? What if I Find a Lump?

You might be wondering, "Can I really trust self-exams?" The truth is, if they were 100% foolproof, we wouldn’t need mammograms!
Early detection is where it’s at, and mammograms can catch issues way earlier than you might feel them. So yes, regular screenings are a must!
But self-exams are super helpful for getting to know your breasts and what’s normal for you.
Now, if you find a lump, don’t freak out!

About 8 out of 10 lumps are totally benign (not cancerous), but it’s still a good idea to check in with your doctor. Remember, self-exams are awesome, but they’re not the end-all-be-all. Regular mammograms are key—they can spot cancer before it’s big enough for you to feel.

Treatment Options

So, let’s say the unexpected happens and you get a breast cancer diagnosis. First off, take a deep breath—don’t lose hope!

Depending on what’s going on, treatment options may include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Hormone therapy
  • Surgery (removing part or all of the breast)
  • Targeted medicines and immunotherapy

If it’s caught early, the survival rate is high!
For late-stage breast cancer, the focus shifts to managing symptoms, improving quality of life and slow the disease's progression —because every moment counts!

Breast cancer is a serious topic, but it doesn’t have to feel like a death sentence. By staying aware, getting regular checkups, and living that healthy lifestyle, you can lower your risk and boost your chances of thriving!
So, let’s rock Pinktober together and take charge of our health!

Remember!
October is not just about wearing pink; it’s about understanding, acting, and protecting yourself and your loved ones. Let’s do this and spread the word —together, we can make a difference!
