Vitamin D and Skin Ageing

by Mehnaz Akhtar 06 Dec 2023 0 Comments

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body, weighing about 15% of your body weight?

It's your first line of defence against the outside world. But alas, as time passes, that once-glorious glow starts to fade, and the signs of ageing begin to surface. The process of ageing is natural and genetically predisposed, affecting all organs, including the skin

The Role of Skin and Vitamin D:

Skin is not just an outer layer; but along with the subcutaneous fat (hypodermis), it acts as an independent peripheral endocrine organ. It serves as both the source and target for various hormones and neuro mediators.

Among its many functions, the skin plays a pivotal role in Vitamin D production. This prohormone transforms into active metabolites, which interact with main skin cells (keratinocytes and fibroblasts) and immune cells, contributing to skin homeostasis and a well-functioning immune system.

Does Vitamin D Deficiency speed up ageing?

Studies suggest that the Vitamin D endocrine system (VDES) regulates ageing in multiple tissues, including the skin. Striking a balance is crucial, as both low levels of Vitamin D (hypovitaminosis D) and excessive levels of vitamin D (hypervitaminosis D) may accelerate ageing. Maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels is essential for preventing premature ageing.

Furthermore, Vitamin D compounds have been shown to protect the skin from the harmful effects of agents like UV radiation, preserving your skin's youthful glow.

Does Vitamin D help with skin ageing?

Vitamin D3 has a number of antiaging and photoprotective actions on the skin. These are accomplished by immunomodulation, anti-inflammatory effects, keratinocyte proliferation, and differentiation regulation for the formation of the epidermal barrier required for skin homeostasis. Furthermore, vitamin D3 stimulates antioxidative reactions, reduces DNA damage, and stimulates DNA repair pathways to prevent premature skin ageing.

Normal vitamin D3 levels prevent premature ageing and maintain good skin ageing.
Studies have demonstrated that active vitamin D3 metabolites can safeguard the skin from the harmful impacts of agents that trigger skin ageing, such as UVR, pollution, and microbial infections. High-dose Vitamin D3, when taken orally soon after UVB exposure, has been found to quickly reverse cutaneous damage caused by photo-induced inflammation and induce repair mechanisms of the epidermal barrier.

Effect of Sun on Ageing

Sunlight can be both a friend and foe for your skin. On the one hand, sunlight enables your skin to synthesize Vitamin D from cholesterol when exposed to it.
However, excessive sun exposure can accelerate the ageing process of your skin. Both UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm) rays have been found to contribute to photoaging, either through imbalanced ROS production or direct DNA damage.
UVA, accounting for more than 80% of daily UV irradiation, can deeply penetrate the reticular dermis, damaging the extracellular matrix (ECM) more significantly than UVB. So, safeguarding your skin from harmful UV rays using sunscreen is crucial to preserving its youthful appearance.

Vitamin D Supplements for Skin

To boost your Vitamin D levels and combat deficiency, you can incorporate Vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, mushrooms, and fortified milk into your diet. However, dietary sources may not always be sufficient, making Vitamin D supplements a valuable addition.

Various forms of Vitamin D, including tablets, softgelsdrops, syrups, and ampoules are available, offering convenient options for all.

In addition to the oral and intramuscular route, vitamin D can be used topically. One such example is  Sunny Vit twist-off Softgels 200,000 IU, offering a unique way to enjoy its benefits directly into your mouth or apply it topically.

So, vitamin D is not only essential for bone health but also plays a significant role in maintaining youthful and healthy skin. Its anti-inflammatory, collagen-boosting properties and its ability to protect the skin from UV radiations make it an indispensable asset in your skincare arsenal.

By ensuring optimal Vitamin D levels and supplementing where necessary, you can harness the power of this miraculous nutrient and unveil a radiant, age-defying complexion.
